The canton of Geneva is located in the extreme west of Switzerland, bordered by France to the west and south. It is crossed by the Rhône and Lake Geneva, which offer magnificent scenery and rich biodiversity.
The canton has a relatively small surface area, but is densely populated and home to the city of Geneva, its capital.
What to do in Geneva?
The canton of Geneva boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage. Indeed, Geneva, with its cobbled streets, historic buildings and picturesque squares, bears witness to its medieval past. However, the western part of the canton is predominantly French-speaking, while the eastern part is German-speaking. The canton of Vaud is characterized by its geographical diversity. It stretches from the shores of Lake Geneva to the foothills of the Alps. So you'll find lake areas, wine-growing hills, agricultural plains and mountains.
What to do in Vaud?
Vaud has a rich cultural life. The city of Lausanne is home to numerous museums, art galleries, theaters and cultural events throughout the year. In addition, the Montreux Jazz Festival on the shores of Lake Geneva is a major event. As is the Montreux Christmas Market.
The canton of Vaud also boasts a number of remarkable historic and architectural sites. Château de Chillon, on the shores of Lake Geneva, is one of Switzerland's most visited castles. Similarly, Lausanne Cathedral, with its impressive Gothic architecture, is an important symbol of the city.
You can also hike through the vineyards of Lavaux (a UNESCO World Heritage site), spend a weekend in Yverdon-les Bains, or go to Leysin for a wonderful weekend. You can also take the opportunity to visit the Glacier 3000 in Les Diablerets.
